Hello everyone my name is Verntzoone Roger Pharn. I am 17 years old and a junior at De Anza High School in Richmond, California. I am Laotian, or to be exact, I am mien. My entire education has been based in the West Contra Costa Unified School district. Not to mention I was born and raised in the bay.
In general, I love to learn. Whether it is a new topic at school, a sport, or method of tying shoes, I’ll be glad to learn it. My favorite sport is volleyball. I have been playing on my school’s team since the 9th grade. I was also a part of varsity cross-country. I am involved in school clubs such as interact and build on. I love making the community a better place.
In addition, I believe that meeting new people is essential to one’s personal development. Besides, making new friends adds spice to your life. This goes to say, I’m quite down to earth and outgoing. To understand more about me isn’t necessarily to understand my educational achievements, but to understand my philosophies and perspective on life.
To make it short, I believe that anyone and everyone has the ability to succeed. If you can believe it, you can achieve it. You just got to keep going and growing. Persevere and put your best efforts into your work. That way, you’ll be sure to never get stuck in an inescapable ditch. Oh, and how can I forget, stay above the influence.
This year's Yale Ivy Scholars Program will be intense, but well worth it. I have never been outside of California but this summer, I’ll be able to go the East Coast to visit top-notch Ivy League schools. I’m entirely grateful and appreciative to all those that have given me this opportunity. It is exciting to say, that I’ll be going there as a representative of not only my school, but also the WCCUSD itself. My career is undecided and my future is unclear. However, I know my experience there will set me on the right path.
